Advisories and Contraindications

not suitable for individuals with autoimmune diseases as it can stimulate the immune system, potentially exacerbating conditions like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. long use of Selenium may slightly cause people with history of skin cancer condition to reoccur. Selenium can worsen hypothyroidism, especially in cases of iodine deficiency. Selenium may increase bleeding risk when combined with blood thinners. In medications like Cisplatin (a chemotherapy drug), corticosteroids, and certain antipsychotics may lower selenium levels. Conversely, selenium may enhance the effects of sedatives and anticoagulants, increasing the risk of side effects. In nutrient consumption, Copper deficiency can reduce selenium activity. Additionally, selenium's efficacy may be compromised in cases of methionine deficiency. Do not exceed recommended dosage unless directed by a health practitioner.

Interactions

Copper and selenium appear to interact, with copper deficiency giving rise to decreased activity of GSH. Many toxic elements such as; lead, cadmium, mercury, and gold possess selenium-antagonistic properties. Selenium also interacts with the amino acid methionine. Dietary selenium is found as selenomethionine. Thus the potency of selenium in this form may be reduced if a situation of methionine deficiency exists. Supplemental seleno-methionine helps overcome this concern. Deficiency of both vitamin E and selenium has been shown to increase markers of free radical damage on polyunsaturated fatty acids.
